Some Navy pilots want to be able to carry arms on military installations. The request comes in the wake of the deadly shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida by a Saudi Arabian aviator training there.

The US Navy said the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and its strike group entered the 6th Fleet’s area of operations. The Truman had been sidelined due to electrical glitches; it is expected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Budget shortfalls are forcing the US Navy to cut flight hours for several squadrons on the East Coast. Maritime patrol squadrons, test pilots, and fleet air support units will all see a 10 percent cut.

The last of the US Navy’s P-3C Orions are on their final overseas deployments, reports The Drive. The patrol planes are being split between bases in Bahrain and Japan. The Navy is preparing to retire its Orions. Their replacements: P-8A Poseidons.

The Pentagon wants to retire the Nimitz-class carrier USS Harry Truman two decades early, which would cut the US aircraft carrier fleet from 11 to 10.

The resurrected 2nd Fleet will become operational by early next year. The fleet will oversee the training of Navy forces on the East Coast. Expect the fleet to be “leaner, agile, and more expeditionary” than it was when deactivated in 2011.
