Join Community Conversations on Race
Join the St. Mary’s County Library for virtual events to engage in conversations and learn from fellow community members. Community partners for the series include the local NAACP, Community Mediation of St. Mary’s, Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions, and St. Mary’s County’s Museum Division.
The Taking of Pearson: 1942
In 1942, the US government, by its right of eminent domain, confiscated a large area of the Eighth District of St. Mary’s County, MD, to be used by the US Navy as a test facility for aircraft. The government bought 6,412 acres for $712,287 consisting of 113 land tracts and home to 230 families. Somewhere within that 6,412 acres was Pearson — but where exactly?
‘Water Taxi’ Painting Donated to Museum
St. Mary’s County artist Nicole Stewart has donated one of her paintings to the St. Clement’s Island Museum. The oil on canvas painting is titled “Water Taxi.” It will be part of the museum’s upcoming art auction fundraiser.
4 Drive-Thru Vaccination Clinics Planned
Four drive-thru clinics will offer free back-to-school vaccinations for children living in St. Mary’s County. Dates are September 18, 19, 23, and 26.

Many residents in the north of St. Mary’s County assumed Pax River was a temporary, war-time arrangement, but Jack Daugherty, a Marine pilot stationed at the Pax at the end of the war, and other ex-Navy personnel thought otherwise, and decided to stay.

The Jo Ricks Music Series was created to bring acclaimed classical, jazz, and world-music artists to Southern Maryland for the artists to share their music through affordable live performances and to share their musical knowledge through educational events for children and youth.
