Historic Preservation Efforts Earn Awards
The St. Mary’s County Historic Preservation Commission announced the 2026 recipients of its awards that recognize outstanding achievement and excellence in the field of historic preservation.
Black Diamond Remembrance April 26
A remembrance ceremony will be held at 2pm Sunday, April 26, 2026, honoring the 87 lives lost in the Black Diamond Disaster, a tragic Civil War-era maritime accident that occurred near St. Clement’s Island during the hunt for presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth.
Groundbreaking at St. Clement’s Island Museum
A public groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the St. Clement’s Island Museum at 2pm Tuesday, August 26, and all community members are invited to attend.
Stone Pens Book on Black Diamond Disaster
Karen Stone has published “Shipwreck on the Potomac: Disaster in Pursuit of Lincoln’s Killer,” a book about the Black Diamond Disaster, a “forgotten” tragedy that occurred on the Potomac River near St. Clement’s Island during the American Civil War during the hunt for presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth.

Karen Stone, manager of the St. Mary’s County Museum Division, will soon publish a book about the Black Diamond Disaster on the Potomac River in 1865.
Set Sail With Museum’s Dinner & Cruise
The 2023 Dinner and a Cruise Series has several dates set for fun evenings of cruising on the St. Clement’s Island water taxi, a seafood dinner at waterside Morris Point Restaurant, and a dessert reception at St. Clement’s Island Museum in Colton’s Point.

Piney Point Lighthouse Museum will hold a four-day outdoor summer educational STEAM program for children ages 6 to 10. The camp will run from 9 am to noon July 19 to 22, 2021.
Open House at Schoolhouse for Black History Month
Open houses are planned at the Drayden African American Schoolhouse in Drayden, MD, in honor of Black History Month. They will be held from 11 am to 2 pm February 20 and 27, 2021.
