Crime and Safety Are Topics of Discussion
Congressman Steny Hoyer took part in a dialogue on Crime and Safety in May during National Police Week with federal law enforcement partners based in Maryland. A bipartisan delegation gathered to talk with the newly confirmed US Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur.
CSM Works to Prevent Suicide
Dozens of people who have lost a loved one to suicide — a high school classmate, a fiancé, a son, a friend, a parent — as well as those who may have thought about suicide themselves and others wishing to offer their support to raise awareness and help prevent suicide came to the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus on May 5 for an Out of the Darkness Campus Walk.
Ceremony Honors 5th President of CSM
State and local dignitaries as well from colleagues from Maryland’s community colleges, and the College of Southern Maryland’s faculty, students, and foundation came together as Dr. Maureen Murphy was installed as the fifth president of the college in a ceremony May 22, 2018.
CSM Golf Team Wins JUCO Championship
The Golf Team at College of Southern Maryland has captured the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference title at the conference tournament in Hagerstown on April 26. The winners of the JUCO Championship finished the regular season 12-2.
Juneteenth Festival Planned June 16
For the 15th year, the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions will offer its annual Juneteenth Festival to celebrate African-American heritage in St. Mary’s County. The free event is set for noon to 8 pm June 16, 2018, at John G. Lancaster Park in Lexington Park.
Law Day 2018 Volunteers Honored

Almaraz Is Regional Golden Gloves Champ
Knowledge Boxing Center’s Phyllis Almaraz became a 2018 Golden Gloves Regional Champion in the 112-pound novice division in April.
CSM Talons Team Earns Innovate Award
The College of Southern Maryland Talons robotics team brought home the Innovate Award from the 2018 VEX U World Championship held April 25-28 in Kentucky.
