UAS Test Site Now UROC
The University of Maryland’s (UMD) UAS Test Site, which in 2019 conducted the first-ever drone delivery of a live organ for transplant, is undergoing a transformation. As of October 20, 2022, it will be known as the UMD UAS Research and Operations Center.
County Veteran’s Day Closings
In observance of the Veterans Day holiday, all St. Mary’s County Government administrative offices will be closed Friday, Nov. 11, 2022. Offices will reopen with regular operating schedules Monday, Nov. 14, 2022.
Dire Recruitment: Navy Hikes Enlistment Age
Dire recruiting realities prompted the Navy to raises its maximum enlistment age from 39 to 41. Under the change, 41-year-olds must report to recruit training by their 42nd birthday and cannot have previously served in the military.
Pax River Museum Unveils “Salute to Naval Aviation”
The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum has unveiled its new Scouts of America Showcase to display various portraits of the Scouts throughout the decades as well as photographs capturing the accomplishments of current scouts. But, the exhibit’s centerpiece is Dan Ropp’s painting “Salute to Naval Aviation.”
Space War College Goes to Hopkins
The Space Force becomes the first branch of the US armed forces to leverage a private university rather than create a new war college. Starting next July, Johns Hopkins will offer a 10-month, accredited professional military education program that draws on its world-renowned courses in international studies and engineering.
STEM Students: JSHS Deadline Is Nov. 18
JSHS Virtual Mentoring is available for high school students pursuing original STEM research with plans to compete at a Regional JSHS Symposium held at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, March 4, 2023. Locally sponsored by The Patuxent Partnership, JSHS connects students with STEM professionals to receive online mentoring on their projects, as well as education and STEM career paths.
13% Decrease in FY’22 Defense Contracting
Federal contract spending declined by 7% in fiscal 2022, driven largely by a 13% decrease in defense spending, which offset the 5% increase in contract spending among civilian agencies.
MD Public Works Awards Grants to So MD
MD Board of Public Works approves grants and cost-share awards in October, including $100,000 for Pax River Naval Air Museum. Only one Southern Maryland farmer, Calvert Commissioner Buddy Hance, received a cost-share best-management award this round.
