DefSec Jim Mattis issued his farewell Monday as he turned over his duties to Deputy DefSec Patrick Shanahan. Mattis urged DoD personnel to “keep the faith in our country and hold fast, alongside our allies, aligned against our foes.”

Lockheed Martin’s experimental supersonic plane has officially entered production. Earlier this year, NASA awarded the company a contract to develop an aircraft capable of reaching supersonic speed without creating the sonic boom that comes with breaking the sound barrier.

The Department of Defense failed its first-ever audit, but officials aren’t surprised. “We never thought we were going to pass an audit, right? Everyone was betting against us that we wouldn’t even do the audit,” Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan told reporters.

A new study finds the US is woefully short of ships and even the current target goal of 355 ships is short of what the country needs. The study calls for a force of 400 ships.
