CSM Grads Celebrate 59th Commencement

College of Southern Maryland celebrated its 59th Commencement on May 24, 2018, as 585 candidates for 669 degrees and 287 certificates were honored at the La Plata Campus.

CSM Student Receives President’s Cup

Camille Joie De Jesus, 19, of Bryans Road is a particularly recognizable person at the College of Southern Maryland’s La Plata Campus. She is all over campus, all the time. Her involvement in so many aspects of college life has landed her the President’s Cup.

CSM Works to Prevent Suicide

Dozens of people who have lost a loved one to suicide — a high school classmate, a fiancé, a son, a friend, a parent — as well as those who may have thought about suicide themselves and others wishing to offer their support to raise awareness and help prevent suicide came to the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus on May 5 for an Out of the Darkness Campus Walk.

Ceremony Honors 5th President of CSM

State and local dignitaries as well from colleagues from Maryland’s community colleges, and the College of Southern Maryland’s faculty, students, and foundation came together as Dr. Maureen Murphy was installed as the fifth president of the college in a ceremony May 22, 2018.

CSM Golf Team Wins JUCO Championship

JUCO Championship

The Golf Team at College of Southern Maryland has captured the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference title at the conference tournament in Hagerstown on April 26. The winners of the JUCO Championship finished the regular season 12-2.

The College of Southern Maryland will be closed for Memorial Day Weekend from May 26-28. St. Mary’s County government administrative offices will be closed May 28.

CSM Talons Team Earns Innovate Award

The College of Southern Maryland Talons robotics team brought home the Innovate Award from the 2018 VEX U World Championship held April 25-28 in Kentucky.

Engineering Students Receive Full Scholarships

Engineering Students

A pair of engineering students at the College of Southern Maryland have received Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarships from the US Department of Defense. Lusby’s Kevin Jackson, 22, and Dentsville’s Noah Schaeffer, 20, received scholarships that will pay for the remainder of their undergraduate education.

Social Justice Day Comes to CSM

Over several weeks this spring, College of Southern Maryland students spent time researching and investigating issues associated with invisible disabilities. Their work culminated in the preparation of CSM’s annual two-day Social Justice Day event, held April 11 and 12, 2018.
