Legislation Would Establish So. MD as National Heritage Area

Fallen Sailors Honored at USS Cole Memorial
The US Navy honored the memory of 17 sailors killed in the 2000 jihadi attack on the destroyer USS Cole. Monday marked 20 years since the attack in a Yemeni port.

MD Adjutant General: Always Recruiting
Adjutant General of Maryland Maj. Gen. Timothy E. Gowen of Leonardtown is in charge of the Maryland Army National Guard, Maryland Air National Guard, Maryland Emergency Management Agency, and Maryland Defense Force. “It’s not your grandfather’s National Guard,” he says, recruiting for the Maryland National Guard.
At Pax, a Scaled-Back 245th Celebration
Today marks the US Navy’s 245th birthday. NAS Pax River’s celebration will take place this morning starting at 11:30 am on base with retired CAPT Glen Ives, a former commanding officer at Pax, as the speaker. The pandemic is forcing a scaled-back celebration this year.

Entwined Histories of Lex Park & Lady Lex
Lexington Park began as a single housing project, named for the Lexington, the Navy’s first really big aircraft carrier. The ship went down in 1942, before the housing project was completed, and in 2018 was found two miles deep on the floor of the Pacific.
DNR Photo Contest Winners Announced
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has announced the winners of the 2020 Natural Resources Photo Contest, with the grand prize going to Zaphir Shamma of Gunpowder for his striking photo of an eastern screech owl nestled in a tree cavity.
