Flags Lowered to Honor Bay District Firefighter

St. Mary’s County has ordered the Maryland state flag and the St. Mary’s County flag lowered to half-staff to honor Bay District Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Marcus Paxton. Mr. Paxton died April 10.

St. Mary’s County is planning a Community Remembrance Project about Benjamin Hance, the only recorded lynching victim in St. Mary’s County in 1887. The next step in the remembrance of Mr. Hance is to establish a historic marker about his story in Leonardtown.
