The Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission will hold a public hearing in Leonardtown from 10am to 2pm November 16, 2024, as part of its ongoing effort to bring awareness to Maryland’s history of racial violence and to foster reconciliation in the present.
A historic marker unveiling ceremony of justice and equity will be held at 4 pm Monday, November 1, 2021, Maryland Emancipation Day, at the Old Jail Museum in Leonardtown.

St. Mary’s County is planning a Community Remembrance Project about Benjamin Hance, the only recorded lynching victim in St. Mary’s County in 1887. The next step in the remembrance of Mr. Hance is to establish a historic marker about his story in Leonardtown.
