Maryland’s first sheriff’s office recently honored Maryland’s first African-American sheriff. On Feb. 22, 2018, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office honored former sheriff Joseph Lee Somerville Sr., the first African-American to be elected sheriff in the state.
