Between June 2014 and December 2016, St. Mary’s County’s six convenience centers have collected 23.91 tons (or 683 bushels) of used oyster shells which are used as substrate on which to plant new oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.

The 47 sailors lost when the USS Tulip exploded in 1864 will be memorialized during a ceremony at 9 am on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, in St. Inigoes. The memorial ceremony is hosted by Naval Air Station Patuxent River and will be held at the memorial site. The USS Tulip was destroyed when its boiler malfunctioned.

Two areas in St. Mary’s County will receive grant funding from the Maryland Rural Legacy Program. The Huntersville Rural Legacy Area will receive $1,474,971 and the Mattapany Rural Legacy Area has been awarded a grant of $771,543.
