College of Southern Maryland’s Student Association at the Leonardtown Campus is hoping to educate the community and expand the dialogue about this problem by hosting a Community Heroin/Opioid Forum at 6 pm April 25. The forum will include a free screening of the documentary “Chasing the Dragon.”

The St. Mary’s County commissioners proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the county. They are hoping to bring increased awareness of this problem to the citizens of St. Mary’s County, and they work with several local agencies to do so, including Walden Behavioral Health.

‘Chasing the Dragon’ Teaches About Opioid Abuse

St. Mary’s County citizens have seen far too much of the devastating impact of drug addiction. To help educate the community about the dangers of opioid use and addition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Drug Enforcement Administration have created a documentary called “Chasing the Dragon” that is available for viewing, with help from Walden.

Walden Raises Awareness of Drug Overdoses

In early September, Walden invited members of the community to participate in International Overdose Awareness Day by walking a complicated maze, encouraging inner reflection and peace. The event, held at Beacon of Hope, was attended by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office as well as members of the community.
