Grant Will Help Upgrade MetCom Facility
A $945,000 grant has been awarded to the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to upgrade the methane co-generation system at the Marlay-Taylor Treatment Facility. The grant is from the Maryland Department of the Environment and will be used for engineering design, construction and start-up services related to the facility’s upgrade.
Rural Legacy Area Discussed at Meeting
After St. Mary’s County government received a number of comments from citizens about the January 2016 draft proposal of the Mattapany Rural Legacy Area, the boundary has been revised. Citizens can review and discuss the changes from 6 to 7:30 pm Aug. 4.
New Tuition Price Set at CSM
Tuition rates at the College of Southern Maryland have been set for the upcoming academic year, with an increase of $3 per credit to $123 per credit, for residents of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.
Hoyer Leads Working Families Forum
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer hosted a Working Families field forum with Rep. Bobby Scott as a special guest. Local elected leaders, policy experts, and workers joined the congressmen in a discussion on House Democrats’ Working Families Agenda, which includes policy solutions to raise the federal minimum wage, ensure pay equity, and provide paid leave for all workers.

Golf Classic Raises Money for Scholarships
For 25 years, the College of Southern Maryland Foundation has been raising money with the annual Golf Classic. The event’s Grand Tournament Sponsor, Marrick Homes, is celebrating along with the foundation as they plan this year’s event, set for Thursday, Aug. 18, at Swan Point Yacht & Country Club in Issue.

Middle School Coding Academy Set
The St. Mary’s County Library in partnership with The Patuxent Partnership is holding coding workshops for the summer. The workshops are for three age groups — elementary, middle, and high schoolers, and the workshops have been meeting at different days and times during the summer.
CSM Trustees Appoint Leadership
Dorothea Holt Smith had been re-appointed as chair of the College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees and Theodore L. Harwood has been appointed vice chair, effective July 1, 2016.
