TPP Seeks Science Fair Mentors

Mentors

If you have become an expert in your field, perhaps it’s time to help the next generation of scientists and engineers at the novice level. The Educational Outreach Office of the Naval Air Warfare Center, or NAWCAD, is looking for local scientist and engineers who are willing and able to be mentors to St. Mary’s County high school students with their science fair projects, and The Patuxent Partnership is helping to get the word out.

Mentors meet with students on certain Saturdays from early October through late January for the Science Fair Mentor Program. The program matches students and mentors according to the mentors’ profession, the students’ project category and their shared interests. The program keeps the mentor-to-student ratio at 2:1 so there is always a mentor available to the students. The program provides volunteer training before the first meeting.

The mentor meetings are held at PaxSpace at 44180 Airport View Drive, No. 8 in Hollywood, MD. PaxSpace allows participants to use the available meeting areas, 3-D printers, soldering stations, programming stations, wood-working, metal-working, and much more.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a mentor can ask for a mentor form from Crystal Krater at [email protected]. The forms must be returned via email by Sept. 21, 2016, at the close of business. Training for the volunteers will be provided on Oct. 1, 2016, and the program’s kick-off event will be Oct. 7 at Great Mills High School starting at 6:30 am.

Before becoming a mentor, each volunteer also must complete the St. Mary’s County Public Schools volunteer training and register as a volunteer online.

Volunteers then log their volunteer time through an EOO volunteer log that will be provided by Ms. Krater then email it to [email protected] at the end of each month that they volunteer. Contact Ms. Krater at [email protected] or 301-342-2786 for further information.
