CSM Educators Create New Product

A friendship that started in the Health Sciences Division of College of Southern Maryland has turned into an entrepreneurship opportunity for Liz Benson and Linda C. Goodman. Through their experience observing nursing students on a simulation manikin, the two realized there was a need for a device that also made use of communication skills, and from there, their company B&G Educational Innovations and their product, ReaLifeSim, were born.

Mobile Vet Center Comes to CSM

Starting out in college can be difficult for anyone, but there are specific challenges for veterans who have returned from deployment and are making the transition to both civilian and college life. To help with that transition, the US Department of Veterans Affairs has created a mobile vet center, a way to bring readjustment counseling and information to veterans, and the center will be at the College of Southern Maryland in September.

Solomons Will Inspire Plein Air Artists

Thirty-one artists will be painting throughout Solomons in an open-air art extravaganza that will benefit students attending the College of Southern Maryland and the community. With inspiration from the land and sea, visiting artists from across the nation will capture local scenes on canvas during the 2016 Solomons Plein Air Festival in Solomons, MD. A portion of the proceeds from the event will support the CSM Foundation’s Dennis Lake Smith Art Scholarship.

‘The Runner Stumbles’ Comes to Main Stage Theatre

As the 19th century was turning to the 20th, a trial for the murder of a nun in a remote parish of Michigan rocked a small community. Milan Stitt wrote a play about the real-life story, and in September that play will be presented by the College of Southern Maryland Main Stage Theatre.

For the second year, girls in the region converged on the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus so they could “Engineer Like a Girl,” attending a week-long camp that focused on a wide range of engineering disciplines.

Gould’s Photography on Display at Gallery

Meggan Gould looks to familiar objects when she practices the art of photography, but she finds a unique way to capture them. The artist, an assistant professor of art at the University of New Mexico, will have her work on display at the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery on the La Plata Campus of the College of Southern Maryland from Sept. 6 through 29.

CSM’s Gottfried Announces Plans to Retire

Dr. Brad Gottfried, president of the College of Southern Maryland, has announced his intent to retire on June 30, 2017. Appointed CSM’s fourth president in 2006, Gottfried has had a significant impact on the college, including expanding the college with a regional Hughesville campus, increasing CSM’s partnerships and articulations, and keeping higher education affordable and accessible.
