Black Diamond Remembrance April 26
A remembrance ceremony will be held at 2pm Sunday, April 26, 2026, honoring the 87 lives lost in the Black Diamond Disaster, a tragic Civil War-era maritime accident that occurred near St. Clement’s Island during the hunt for presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth.
MD Day Mass Set on St. Clement’s Island
On Maryland Day 2026, the annual Mass on St. Clement’s Island will take place at 10am to commemorate the first Catholic Mass in the English New World.
Book on Black Diamond Disaster in the Works
Karen Stone, manager of the St. Mary’s County Museum Division, will soon publish a book about the Black Diamond Disaster on the Potomac River in 1865.
Water Taxi Resumes March 25
The St. Clement’s Island Museum water taxi will resume seasonal operations on Maryland Day, March 25, 2024. The water taxi, which provides rides for visitors from St. Clement’s Island Museum to St. Clements Island State Park, will be cruising daily through October 31, 2024.

Youth Pilgrimage Registration Open
The Southern Maryland ROOTS Youth Group is planning its first High School Youth Pilgrimage, “The Journey,” to historic St. Clement’s Island in Colton’s Point on September 24, 2022.
Weekend Events Feature Local Lighthouses
Celebrate St. Mary’s County’s most significant lighthouses during National Lighthouse Weekend August 6 and 7 at Piney Point Lighthouse in Piney Point and Blackistone Lighthouse on St. Clement’s Island, near Colton’s Point.

Maryland Day festivities are being planned at St. Clement’s Island Museum in Colton’s Point from 10 am to 5 pm March 25, 2022.
A First for Local Vineyards — Wine & Arts Fest
St. Mary’s County’s wineries and local crafters and artisans will be front and center at the First Landing Wine & Arts Festival to be held April 10.
