Lexington Park is seeking an artist for its first public mural. The St. Mary’s Community Development Corp. is soliciting design proposals for a mural in black and white plus one accent color to appear on all or part of a 15-foot-high and 50-foot-wide cinderblock wall visible from a busy Lexington Park intersection.

Painter, sculptor, and printmaker Charlie Hewitt graduated from Great Mills High School and spent formative years in St. Mary’s County, MD. His work will be shown in the new Kay Daugherty Gallery at Annmarie Garden beginning Aug. 12. “The Banquet Years” runs through Sept. 25.

Once upon a time a cultural renaissance cloaked St. Mary’s County, a brief decade over by 1985, that seems both quite a long time ago and just the other day to Katie Watts as she muses about the mezzanine gallery — the Kay Daugherty Gallery — at Annmarie Garden named after her mother, and its opening exhibition, “The Banquet Years,” by Charlie Hewitt.
