UPDATE: The rain date for the Great Mills Trading Post’s Battle by the Bay Truck and Tractor Pull at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds in Leonardtown has been activated. The pull will now be held on Sunday, July 30. Gates open at noon and the pull begins at 2pm.
Record 21-Pound Snakehead Caught in Dorchester County
Damien Cook of Rhodesdale has been recognized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources as a new state record holder for Northern snakehead – Channa argus — in the state’s Invasive Division. Cook caught the 21.0-pound fish on July 5 while fishing in a Dorchester County river.
Lockheed Top Dollar Contractor Again
The General Services Administration released FY22’s financial commitments federal agencies made to their top 100 contractors. As in past years, Lockheed won more than anyone else, $47.7 billion – nearly as much as the next two combined: Raytheon scored $27 billion and General Dynamics at $24.7 billion.
Cooling Centers Available in St. Mary’s
With extreme heat in the forecast for the remainder of the week, St. Mary’s County government is announcing the availability of cooling centers for the public.

SMECO members have reported receiving calls from scammers threatening to disconnect their power if they don’t make a payment. Do not make a payment until you’ve checked your account balance. SMECO will not call and threaten to disconnect your power in 30 minutes.

MacArthur & FDR Construction Starts July 24
St. Mary’s County Department of Public Works & Transportation’s construction contractor will be installing a roundabout at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and proposed FDR Boulevard beginning on or about Monday, July 24, 2023. The work is expected to take approximately 60 days to complete.
DNR Photo Entries Due Aug. 1
The 20th annual Maryland Department of Natural Resources Photo Contest is open, but entries are due by 5 pm August 1, 2023.
