Capital Credit Refunds Coming to SMECO Bills

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has been able to save money on its expenses through the year, so it will issue capital credit refunds to customer-members totaling nearly $3.8 million.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has received reports of scam calls, related to the installation of smart meters in homes. The co-op wants to warn customer-members to be safe and vigilant, especially at home.

College Scholarships Awarded by SMECO

Four high school seniors have been awarded scholarships by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative. Every year, the co-op awards four college scholarships to students who live in its service area.

SMECO Wants to Reduce Rates

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has requested permission to reduce its rates by more than 10 percent for residential customers. If the request is approved, the lower rates would go into effect this summer and be seen on the August 2017 bills.

Candidates for SMECO Board Named

Five seats are up for election on the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative Board of Directors, and the nominees for those seats have been announced. The SMECO board nominating committee met May 13 to decide on the candidates for this year’s election.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has hit a milestone. The co-op has announced that residential customer-members have bought three million ENERGY STAR bulbs since 2010.

Phone Scam Targets SMECO Customers

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative is issuing a warning to its customers to beware of scammers targeting residents in the region. Some customer-members have received phone calls from scammers identifying themselves as SMECO employees and demanding prepaid debit cards in order to avoid having electric service cut off.

SMECO Nominating Committee Meets May 13

The 2017 Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative Nominating Committee — appointed at the March meeting of SMECO’s Board of Directors — will meet at 9 am Saturday, May 13, 2017, to select candidates for SMECO’s board.
