SMECO is urging its customer-members to take steps to prepare for possible weather-related power outages due to the potential heavy rains and high winds that could face Southern Maryland during this year’s hurricane season.

Christmas in April organizations in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties got a boost recent from Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative and CoBank. SMECO received a $4,500 contribution from CoBank to pass on to the non-profit organization.

Each time Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative announces a training class for apprentice linemen, hundreds of applications come in. However, many of the applicants lack the basic skills they need to even apply. To combat this problem, SMECO has teamed up with College of Southern Maryland to create a pre-apprenticeship program.
