Lancaster Park Improvements Begin

Lancaster Park

John G. Lancaster Park is about to get a whole lot better. Long-awaited improvements at the park, located in Lexington Park, are underway. Crews are constructing two multi-purpose athletic fields, a parking lot that will fit 120 cars, a new entrance road to the park, and even road improvements along Willows Road.

The California and Lexington Park areas have been dealing with a shortage of athletic fields for youth sports for years, and these improvements will alleviate some of that problem. The fields can be used for youth football, lacrosse, and soccer.

“The new facilities will go a long way in addressing the shortage of athletic fields for youth sports in the California and Lexington Park areas,” said Brian Loewe, the director of the St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation and Parks.

St. Mary’s County and the Department of Recreation and Parks is looking forward to having these new facilities, and thanks the county’s citizens for their patience during the period of construction. As for users of the current park facilities, not much is expected to change. The existing amenities at Lancaster Park are still usable and can be accessed through the original park entrance.

Improvements to the park were made possible by funding from the commissioners of St. Mary’s County and Maryland’s Program Open Space.

John G. Lancaster Park offers various amenities for playing sports and hosting sporting events. The park also features a disc golf course with each hole a mix of short, moderate, and long-range pins.

John G. Lancaster Park is at 21550 Willows Road in Lexington Park, MD. Questions or comments about the improvement project at Lancaster Park should be addressed with the Department of Recreation and Parks at 301-475-4200, ext. 1811.
