USS Tulip Memorial Ceremony Planned Nov. 3
The 47 sailors lost when the USS Tulip exploded in 1864 will be memorialized during a ceremony at 9 am on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, in St. Inigoes. The memorial ceremony is hosted by Naval Air Station Patuxent River and will be held at the memorial site. The USS Tulip was destroyed when its boiler malfunctioned.

There are plenty of events on tap at the College of Southern Maryland in November. The month opens with performances of “Ragtime” by the Main Stage Theatre.
12th Annual Defense Forum Planned
The Patuxent Partnership and the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary’s College of Maryland are coming together to present the 12th annual Patuxent Defense Forum from 8:30 a.m. to 5 pm Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017. The theme this year is “The Arctic Domain: From Economics to National Security.” Check-in and coffee will open at 8:15 am.
CSM Eligible for $1 Million Aspen Prize
Excellence has become expected at College of Southern Maryland. The college has been named as one of 150 community colleges in the nation that are eligible to compete for the 2019 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the country’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance in US community colleges.
Hypoxia Episodes Continue to Haunt Fighter Jets
F-35A pilots report five more Hypoxia-like episodes with tingling fingers and other symptoms. In June the deaths of four Hornet pilots were attributed to “physiological episodes” associated with the oxygen deprivation of Hypoxia.
Local Artist Sought for Hospital Mural
MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown is a place for wellness, and when staff members take the stairs, they are taking steps toward a wellness goal. To inspire staff members to take the stairs, hospital leaders are looking for a local artist willing to donate time and talent to paint a mural in the main stairwell.
