Hazardous Waste Collection Sept. 10
It’s time for citizens to clean out barns, basements, sheds, garages, storage areas under kitchen sinks, and properly discard potentially toxic/dangerous materials. St. Mary’s County residents wishing to safely dispose of household hazardous waste materials will once again have an opportunity to do so. The St. Andrew’s Landfill will host a hazardous waste collection Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Army Grounds Chinook Helicopter Fleet
The Army has grounded the entire CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet following an undisclosed number of recent engine fires in the Boeing-made fleet. No deaths or injuries occurred due to the fires.
TPP Thanks Educators at STEM Summer Camps
With schools reopening, summer camps soon will be a distant memory. The Patuxent Partnership was pleased to support, and enjoyed visiting, some 2022 STEM Student Summer Camps in Southern Maryland. TPP was able to provide funding for the camps through the Maryland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Leonardtown Middle School hosted the 2022 Thinkers’ Space program in July. The camp provided a variety of STEM activities for students entering grades 2 through 8. students explored concepts such as Engineering, Rocketry, Aeronautics, Coding, Robotics, Space Science, and Space Citizenship over the 4 days, with small group breakout sessions specializing in group…
SMECO Holds 84th Annual Meeting
More than 8,600 voted in SMECO’s election of its Board of Directors for the next three year. The incoming directors are: W. Michael Phipps of Calvert County; George Heinze and Richard A. Winkler of Charles County; James A. Richards of Prince George’s County; and Scott White of St. Mary’s County.
SEAL’s Death Revives Drug & Brutality Concerns
SEALs have defended for decades their Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training to outsiders and Navy leadership who say it is too difficult. Since 1953, at least 11 men have died. New questions are arising about how use of performance-enhancing drugs have changed the standards, and what it means if the obvious cheating entailed with illegal drug use threatens the ethical core of the SEALs.

Sea Scout Completes Bee Project at Pax
Colin Maupin of Sea Scouts Ship 1942 built mason bee houses and installed them at NAS Patuxent River as part of his Eagle Scout project.
