Walden Raises Awareness of Drug Overdoses
In early September, Walden invited members of the community to participate in International Overdose Awareness Day by walking a complicated maze, encouraging inner reflection and peace. The event, held at Beacon of Hope, was attended by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office as well as members of the community.

Hoyer Announces Firefighters Grant
The National Volunteer Fire Council just got a boost from the federal government. Congressman Steny H. Hoyer has announced that a $1,069,174 grant is being awarded to the NVFC through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

CSM Staffers Stuff Backpacks for Students
Students in elementary, middle and high schools in Charles County have gotten an extra bit of help with school supplies this year, courtesy of a large group of volunteers from the College of Southern Maryland. The volunteers were stuffing backpacks of just about every color and design with pencils, paper, crayons, markers, highlighters, binders, composition books, glue and glue sticks, scissors, rulers and more.

Athletes at CSM athletes are recognized for athletic performance by the National Junior College Athletic Association and Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference during the 2015-16 season.
Stars Are Out to Support Walden Sierra
Walden Sierra’s The Stars Are Out Tonight is the organization’s third fundraising evening of strolling entertainment to bolster the nonprofit agency’s services. It will be held Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at Olde Breton Inn at 21890 Society Hill Road in Leonardtown. The event will begin at 7 p.m.
CSM Veterans Lounge Gets Facelift
College of Southern Maryland has created a space for student veterans to relax, study, and be with their peers on the La Plata campus, and US Rep. Steny H. Hoyer recently visited the campus to check it out. The Veterans Lounge includes computers, work tables, a projector and podium for lectures, and a comfortable seating area to give students a place to connect with fellow military veterans, study, gather, and support each other.
