Hoyer: Recovery Improving Lives of All Americans

Online All-Star

US citizens have seen significant improvements in their home and work lives recently as the country continues to see economic recovery, according to a report from the US Census Bureau, and House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA), chair of the Democratic Whip Task Force on Poverty, Income Inequality, and Opportunity, have released a statement to respond to the news.

The statement says the report shows that the country is not just recovering from the recession, but that the everyone across the economic spectrum is seeing the benefits of recovery. All three of the major economic indicators – poverty rate, median income, and the rate of uninsured – has shown major improvement. The statement from Democratic Whip Hoyer and Congresswoman Lee says this recovery is a testament to the resilience of American workers and entrepreneurs, as well as to the success of the recovery policies that were enacted at the height of the recession.

“Today’s report showed that median incomes rose for every quintile of Americans, including a 6.56 percent increase for the bottom fifth of earners – a faster rise in incomes for the poorest 20 percent than for the highest 20 percent of earners,” the statement reads. “The report also showed the poverty rate having fallen to 13.5 percent, with 3.5 million Americans rising above the poverty line.” The report indicates that the gap between those at the bottom and those at the top has narrowed.

House Democratic Whip Hoyer and Congresswoman Lee state that this narrowing gap is one of the keys to winning the war on poverty and growing the middle class.

The number of people without health insurance also fell by another 4 million this year, a direct result of the Affordable Care Act. The rate of uninsured is at an all-time low of 9.1 percent.

“House Democrats will keep fighting for sound fiscal and budgetary policies that invest in a stronger economic future and enable all of our people to make it in America,” the statement concluded.
