STEM-ING Call Workshop Sponsorship Opportunities

The Patuxent Partnership (TPP) is pleased to announce that, for the third year, we will be sponsoring the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – Inspiring the Next Generation (STEM-ING) event. STEM-ING is designed to give middle and high school girls in the Southern Maryland Tri-county region exposure to STEM fields and associated careers.

Please contact The Patuxent Partnership to learn how to help support one of these workshops.

2015 STEMING Workshop Descriptions

Blast Off!  Rocket scientists can’t have ALL the fun! Launch water rockets, chase propelled objects, and get your body moving while learning the basics of rocket propulsion during this workshop. You’ll learn about rocket hardware, propellants, and the relationship between energy, thrust, pressure, and distance during this high-flyin’-heart-pumpin’ workshop.

Bristle Bots  See engineering in action. Build your own dancing mini-machine using motors, batteries, and circuits! In this workshop you will be introduced to the concepts of motion, vibration, weight balance, and kinetic energy transfer. Then you will design and build your own machine to be a cute, furry, slow moving ‘bot or a lean, mean, speedster.

Climbing Up on Science  Imagine dangling on a rope… your hands gripping onto anything…just trying to hang on! Betcha didn’t think science could be this exciting! Join us for this cliff-hanging workshop to learn how physics and mechanical science concepts like friction, center of gravity, weight distribution, and equipment design keep you safe while high off the ground in the sport of rock climbing! Suit-up and use the relevant concepts you’ve learned to race your friends to the top of a massive rock structure!

Note: There are inherent bodily risks involved in climbing wall activities. Prior parent consent and waiver are required during registration. Students are encouraged to wear long shorts/pants for this exercise.

College Campus Coordinates Want to see where college students live, learn, and apply STEM education? Take a walk with St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) staff and students through the college campus to discover Math, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Neurosciences laboratories, classrooms, and facilities. You’ll learn all about college hot spots and find them using global positioning systems. Ask your tour guides about their STEM career fields, campus life, and fun college experiences!

C.S.I Know Whodunit! Be Sherlock Holmes for a day while using math and forensic science to solve a crime. In this workshop, you will be presented with a variety of evidence, a number of suspects, and the skills needed to measure, collect, and analyze data in order to eliminate suspects one -by-one. This workshop will put your math and CSI skills to the test to figure out whodunit.

Cyber Sleuthing Are you interested in computer crime? Want to become a digital crime scene investigator? As technology becomes increasingly more sophisticated, the likelihood of Cyber-attacks continues to soar! During this workshop you will play an important Role in the cyber line-of-defense by stopping a cyber-attack (based on a real life scenario!) Practice forensic case detective work, handle digital evidence, and perform data recovery and extraction just like cyber technologists. Come learn about Cyber technology and Cyber-crime investigation using real-world techniques and equipment and help us keep those around you safe from Cyber-crime!

Harmonizing Hamsters  Jam like the professionals, create your own tunes, and sample remixes! All of today’s hit recording artists use computer editing and mixing to create their own hit music. Using a virtual music studio, you will learn about pitch, audio frequencies, signal processing, and the career of audio engineering while creating music for your very own harmonizing, lip-syncing, cartoon hamsters.

Delicious DNA You have most likely heard about DNA, but have you ever seen it? All living organisms have DNA, and there are specific sequences that make up genetic profiles. Come learn about DNA structure and how DNA differs among plants, animals, and humans. Then, model these patterns and sequences by building gummy bear helixes and genetic chain bracelets to help you visualize what’s going on behind the scenes of genetic patterning. Who knew learning about double-helixes could be so fun… and delicious!?

Dog Days An Intro to Veterinary Medicine Furry Friends are cute, but just like us, they need medical attention too. Come learn about and try your hand at some Veterinary Medical techniques for a day. Physical exams, cleaning ears, brushing teeth, bandaging…. learn what it takes to become involved in the world of veterinary medicine! Bring your questions and our hands because you’ll be using them in this workshop with real live animals!

Note: This workshop is not recommended for students with any skin/pet allergies. Prior parent consent and waiver will be required.

The Beauty of Science Think chemistry is only for funny looking geeks? Think again! Let this workshop help you learn how chemistry and chemical engineering are the bases for creating glamorous makeup. Walk away with your self-made lip gloss AND an understanding of how chemical properties are used and how ingredients are selected to create useful chemical mixtures. Note: This workshop is not recommended for students with any food/skin allergies. Prior parent consent and waiver will be required.

The Coolest Stuff on Earth What’s colder than ice, but boils? What can covert a piece of fruit into a hammer? What can make ice cream in an instant? Find out during this exploration of material properties and basic thermodynamics principles. Through freezing, thawing, measuring, smashing, squishing, and breaking, you will be amazed to learn what happens to normal, everyday objects when we change its material properties by varying temperature. Then, discover how scientists are creating the coldest stuff on Earth using lasers and the concepts you just learned.

ROV Adventure Have you ever wanted to explore the ocean depths? Using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), you will have a chance to build sensors, sample collectors, and robotic arms. Learn about ROVs and use one to complete an underwater mission. Bring your innovation and explore the deep unknown with us!

Whirly-‘ma-jig – Helicopters are used to hover overhead for reporting the news, dash in and drop chemicals for firefighting, transport troops and artillery for military defense overseas, rush patients in and out of hospitals, and zip along the coastline at your scenic vacation destination. There are even unmanned helicopters that can launch from the palm of your hand and fly through a canyon to look for a lost person. Come learn how these whirly-‘ma-jigs work and see why forward, up and down, sideways and backwards flight is all the rage. You are sure to be flying (or spinning) by the seat of your pants as you explore helicopter concepts then design, build, and test your own rotor system.
