Author to discuss writing, activism at CSM

Martinez to speak at Leonardtown campus

The College of Southern Maryland ‘s Connections Reading will welcome author and activist Demetria Martinez on April 1.

Martinez will read from her works and discuss how writing and activism can bridge borders between people. The talk will begin at 7:30 pm April 1 in the campus auditorium at 22950 Hollywood Road in Leonardtown.

Cost will be $3 for students with ID and in advance; $5 general admission at door. Email [email protected] or call 301-934-7864.

Ms. Martinez is an author, poet, activist, and journalist based in New Mexico. Her work is particularly relevant, Neal Dwyer, Connections coordinator and CSM professor noted, at a time when issues of immigration have generated national debate. She considers her writing and activism as ways to explore and bridge borders between people.

The CSM spring 2016 Connections series also featured poets Naomi Shihab Nye and Michael Glaser.

Rounding out the series will be the Connections literary magazine publication reading at 7:30 pm May 6 at the La Plata campus Center for Business and Industry at 8730 Mitchell Road. The Connections magazine reading May 6 is free.

Other offerings at the college include:

CSM Barbershop Extravaganza — 4 pm April 2 at the La Plata campus. Southern Mix, directed by Paul Douglass, will be joined by professional ensembles for an afternoon of barbershop harmony. $5 in advance, $7 day of event.

CSM Jazz Festival — 8 pm April 8-9 at the La Plata campus. Directed by Randy Runyon, Solid Brass is CSM’s jazz ensemble and is joined by Grammy Award-winning international jazz artist, percussionist Gregg Bissonette, who has toured with Santana, David Lee Roth, Ringo Starr, Linda Ronstadt, and Andrea Bocelli. Workshops for high school students also will be featured. $5 in advance, $7 day of event.
