St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s musician-in-residence Brian Ganz will perform and discuss Beethoven’s “Pathétique Sonata,” Thursday, Oct. 3 at noon in St. Mary’s College’s Auerbach Auditorium, St. Mary’s Hall. The performance is part of the Arthur and Alice Fleury Zamanakos Concert Series.

“Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata is significant in that Beethoven did not often attach descriptive titles to his works,” says Mr. Ganz. “Such familiar names as the “Moonlight Sonata” and the “Appassionata Sonata” were given by publishers, not by Beethoven himself, and the Pathétique Sonata stands alone as a descriptively titled masterpiece.” Ganz will explore the significance of the unusual title Beethoven gave to his well-known composition, and will make the case that it is one of the first great works of the Romantic era.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the St. Mary’s College Music Department at [email protected].
