LEAD Maryland Tours Water Facility

Construction cranes at the Marlay Taylor Water Reclamation Facility during the early days of construction of an upgraded Enhanced Nutrient Removal system. LEAD Maryland recently toured the facility to learn more about the upgrades.

Members of LEAD Maryland’s Class IX 2015-2016 toured St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission’s Marlay Taylor Water Reclamation Facility. The discussion centered on the Enhanced Nutrient Removal construction upgrades that are underway at the Lexington Park, MD,  facility.

The tour was led by DuWayne Potter, wastewater treatment superintendent with St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission.

Upgrades to the facility’s ENR are a result of a state-mandated program that was initiated to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus discharges into the Chesapeake Bay. The upgrades will meet low nitrogen and phosphorus discharge requirements and include new sludge storage facilities, as well as a fats, oils, and grease, or FOG, receiving station. Part of the funding for the $39 million project was provided by money that has been collected from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund.

Marlay Taylor is the largest treatment facility that is operated by the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission, or MetCom, and has an average daily flow of approximately 4.2 million gallons. The facility serves Lexington Park, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Great Mills, California, as well as the St. George Island, Piney Point, Callaway, and St. Mary’s College areas.

LEAD Maryland is dedicated to finding and developing leaders to serve agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities. People who participate in the program provide education in public issues and then provide support, direction, and resources to help other emerging leaders to help these sectors. LEAD is a partnership with the University of Maryland Extension.
