The St. Mary’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation will host its second annual community document shredding event at the St. Andrew’s Landfill on St. Andrew’s Church Road from 8 am to noon Saturday, Aug. 20.

Residents can have their confidential, private, and important documents destroyed by a professional shredding service at no cost. The truck, provided by Nexcut Shredding,  is capable of holding approximately 6 tons of paper using a “pierce and tear” system (knife-edged wheels to pull paper through a central cutting face).  All paper material shredded during the event will be recycled.

Residents should not bring materials which are not confidential in nature (such as newspapers and magazines) as they will cause the truck to fill up more quickly. Citizens should limit the number of boxes brought to the event to two standard bankers’ boxes (10″H x 12″W x 15”D) per person as many residents as possible can be served. The goal is to have between 230 to 255 individuals bring material to the event. Last year’s event yielded more than 4,650 pounds of paper.

St. Mary’s County residents also will have an opportunity to properly dispose of potentially toxic materials at the landfill.

The landfill will host a Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. The event will take place between 8 am and 4:30 pm.

The county’s Department of Public Works and Transportation thanks the residents of St. Mary’s County for participating in the largest single day collection event Aug. 22, 2015. The event collected 57,440 pounds (28.72 tons) of material.

The program allows residents to clean out their barns, basements, sheds, garages, storage areas under kitchen sinks, etc. and properly discard potentially toxic and dangerous materials.

Hazardous waste items which will be accepted for collection include acids, ammonia, bleach, cleaners, fuels, gas/oil mixtures, gasoline, household and lawn pesticides, mercury thermometers, photography chemicals, pool chemicals, solvents, wood preservatives, paint thinners, and alkyd (oil-based) paint.

Since latex paint is not considered hazardous, it can be disposed with your regular trash collection as long as the mixture is harden by adding absorbents (cat litter, sand, sawdust, or paint drying crystals) prior to disposal.

If citizens are unable to do so, latex paint also will be accepted.

Items which will not be accepted include ammunition, asbestos, explosive materials, medical waste, pharmaceuticals, radioactive materials, and picric acid.
