Message from the Cap’n — Bluebirds Galore

Message from the Cap’n is a compilation of fishing advice, waterman and weather insights, Chesapeake lore, and ordinary malarkey from the folks who keep their feet wet in the Potomac and St. Mary’s rivers.

We all love to have bluebirds nearby to add beauty to our yards. And there are plenty about this year, just looking for a place to lay eggs. These boxes aren’t so pretty , but have functioned well so far.

Two successful broods of 15 birds have taken flight from this new box with the rectangular entry.  The white composite board probably is cooler than wood.

Eastern Bluebirds typically have more than one successful brood per year, according to AllAboutBirds.com. Young produced in early nests usually leave their parents in summer, but young from later nests frequently stay with their parents over the winter.

  • Many nesting sites are in my territory.
  • This is just the beginning of my story.
  • I have escorted my friend far and near.
  • Hoping it’s exciting enough to keep her here.
  • **
  • She is very particular you see,
  • As we survey from a tree.
  • Spring is well underway,
  • I hope she decides to nest and stay.
  • ***
  • Now that this is done,
  • Our time together has begun.
  • As sky blue eggs fill the nest,
  • nature generally does its best.
  • ****
  • I protect this territory,
  • My mate completes the story.
  • And mister snake in the grass,
  • Must be taught only to pass.
  • *****
  • About a week later the young arrive,
  • To be fed and helped to survive.
  • Two weeks hence they leave the nest.
  • Cared for by parents doing their best.
  • ******
  • Once on the wing,
  • They see what nature will bring.
  • They get to know their backyard well,
  • Fluttering around for the whole world to tell.
