Cap’n Reports: Wounded Warrior Classic Continues

Message from the Cap’n is a compilation of fishing advice, waterman and weather insights, Chesapeake lore, and ordinary malarkey from the folks who keep their feet wet in the Potomac and St. Mary’s rivers.

The Cap’n

Right here in Piney Point, MD, the Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training and Education has served as more than just a school for merchant mariners. For nearly a decade, its waterfront has been the launching point for one of Southern Maryland’s most meaningful fishing tournaments — the Seafarers Waterfront Classic.

Founded in 2013 by Seafarers International Union Vice President George Tricker, the annual tournament was created to honor the men and women of the Wounded Warrior Anglers of America. From the start, the event brought together SIU members, maritime industry leaders, and veteran supporters from across the country — some traveling as far as Canada — all gathering at the PHC docks on the Potomac before dawn.

The tournament ran uninterrupted through 2019, maintaining its partnership with the Wounded Warrior Anglers for all seven years. The COVID-19 pandemic forced a three-year suspension. When the Classic resumed in May 2023 — its eighth annual edition — 17 boats and 161 anglers returned to the Piney Point waterfront, this time raising funds for the Boulder Crest Foundation, a nonprofit serving veterans and first responders through post-traumatic growth programs.

This year’s event enjoyed beautiful weather and a great start at dawn.

The Paul Hall Center is located on more than 60 acres of Potomac waterfront in Piney Point, is operated by the Seafarers International Union and has trained US merchant mariners since 1967.

Till next time, remember “It’s Our Bay, Let’s Pass It On.”
