Veterans Book Club Plans Discussions

The Lexington Park Library has created a book club just for veterans, and plans are in the works for upcoming book club discussions. Local author and veteran Wayne Karlin will lead the discussion in June.

From 11:30 am to 1:30 pm June 3, the discussion will be about “If You Lived Here” by Dana Sachs. This is the story of Shelley Marino, who is 42 years old and desperately wants to be a mother. She has decided to adopt from a foreign country, but her husband cannot fathom starting over as a father at his age, especially with what he knows about the world and what he has seen in war. Shelley befriends Mai, a woman who emigrated from Vietnam decades before and has a tragic and difficult past. Both women’s lives are altered by their friendship and by the journey they take together.

The discussion in May was about “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. The New York Times bestseller is an international classic. The story is about a friendship between a wealthy boy and a servant’s son, set in a country that is being destroyed by war. The story explores the relationship between the boys, between fathers and sons, and between those who have betrayed each other.

The book club has been created specifically for veterans. The St. Mary’s County Library received a generous grant through the Maryland Humanities Council, and the grant allows the library to provide a free lunch and materials to participating veterans.

Registration for the book club is required to ensure enough supplies are available for everyone. Register by calling Cecelia Thomas at 301-863-8188, ext. 3; by emailing [email protected]; or stopping by in person at the Lexington Park Library branch at 21677 FDR Blvd.
