St. Mary’s Surgeon Receives Honors

Dr. John Roache has touched the lives of countless patients in St. Mary’s County, many of whom are multiple generations of the same family, as well as friends, co-workers, and neighbors, for more than 42 years at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. As this respected and renowned surgeon retired from his long career, the St. Mary’s County commissioners honored him with a ceremony to thank him for all his years of service. The meeting room on the day of the ceremony was packed with well-wishers and friends.

Dr. Roache has long been dedicated to serving the county, a career that is exemplified by the many committees and county boards on which he has served. Among them are the hospital’s Cancer Committee, Infectious Control, Tissue and Transfusion Committee, Hospital Disaster, St. Mary’s Ryken High School Alumni Board member, Medical Society, Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy Board of Trustees, Board of Trustees of the College of Southern Maryland, and the board for the Juvenile Drug Program in St. Mary’s County. He is currently the three term president of the board of directors for St. Mary’s County Historical Society.

“Dr. John Roache has been a devoted member of Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad for 56 years, serving 36 years as president and two years as vice president,” St. Mary’s Commissioner Mike Hewitt said at the ceremony. “He also served as president of the St. Mary’s County Rescue Association for 26 years. In 2003, he was inducted into the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen Association Hall of Fame and has received the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services’ Southern Maryland Star of Life Award and Leon W. Hayes Award for Excellence.”

The commissioners expressed their appreciation to Dr. Roache during the ceremony and congratulated him on his upcoming retirement.
