SMHEC Offers New Degree Programs
If you made a New Year’ resolution to improve your education credentials, then check out the new degree programs at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center.
SMHEC has more than 100 courses starting in Spring I and Spring II for 2017.
The doctorate in project management from the University of Maryland College Park Clark School of Engineering is in place at SMHEC. For more information, call John Cable, director, at 301-405-8935.
Florida Institute of Technology has received approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to offer a number of new degrees at SMHEC, including two in logistics management, one an MS and the other a masters of management with a concentration in logistics management. They also have new master’s degrees in technology management and the more technical engineering management. The FIT doctorate of business administration will start in the fall semester 2017 and is still taking more applications. Call Dr. Bob Schaller at 301-862-1004 for more information.
SMHEC offers cybersecurity courses close to home at its California, Maryland, campus for those seeking degrees in the cybersecurity field. There is a global shortage of skilled security professionals, and it is predicted to only get worse. Demand for information security experts is expected to grow by 53 percent by 2018, according to an analysis by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. At present it is a background needed for 26 percent of the jobs listed locally per one study.

CMIT 202 6010 (25313) Fundamentals of Computer Troubleshooting, Mondays 6 to 9 pm. CMIT 321 6015 (25004) Ethical Hacking, is on Tuesdays 6 to 9 pm.
CMIT 265 6050 (25317) Fundamentals of Networking, Mondays 6 to 9 pm, March 13 to May 7.
CSIA 310 Cybersecurity Processes and Technologies, 5:30 to 9:30 pm Thursdays.
CSIA 350 Cybersecurity in Business and Industry will be offered 6 to 9 pm Wednesdays.

CSSS 5000 Introduction to Cybersecurity, a graduate class, will be offered by Webster University from 5:30 to 9:30 pm Thursdays beginning Jan. 12.

The center is constantly adding new partnerships and new degree programs, to fit the needs of the region’s workforce. This helps both employers – who need trained staff – and employees – who can increase their value at the work place by getting the best training.
