Road Work to Close Part of Kinnegad Drive

Route 5 Intersection

If you normally drive on Kinnegad Drive in the Hickory Hills Subdivision, you’ll need to make alternate plans for a few weeks in June and July 2016, due to road work.

The portion of Kinnegad Drive between Amber Drive and Brawny Street will be closed for about four weeks, starting Monday, June 6. During the closure, workers will be constructing a roundabout. The work is part of the FDR Boulevard – Phase 1A project, located in the 8th Election District.

If drivers need access to the area, they will need to follow the posted detour signs. The detour will lead you to Athlone Drive as the primary point of access to Amber Drive. Traffic going to and leaving the Westmeath Condominium area will be able to access Amber Drive, from Athlone Drive to Castletown Way. Workers will be on the site from 7 am to 5 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 5 pm on weekends.

If you travel the area, be sure to make time for minor traffic delays. There will be construction vehicles in the area throughout the construction. Pay attention to possible changes in the in the conditions of the roads and traffic, and be aware that weather conditions might cause the schedule to be modified.

FDR Blvd

Amber Drive to be reconstructed and changed to FDR Boulevard

FDR Boulevard is designed for lower traffic speeds and to accommodate pedestrians and bicycles since its full scope traverses large residential developments such as Laurel Glen, Hickory Hills, and San Souci, according to the newly adopted Lexington Park Master Plan.

The plan ranks FDR Boulevard as St. Mary’s County government’s top transportation priority to “increase access between primary destinations … Other streets in this priority provide important connections between existing neighborhoods and commercial areas.”

This particular segment of FDR Boulevard into Hickory Hills does not make additional connections, although construction is being prepared for another segment of FDR Boulevard to through the neighborhoods behind the First Colony shopping center. Ultimately all of the segments of FDR are to connect and parallel Route 235 down to the FDR Boulevard segment running along the side of the Millison Plaza shopping center in Lexington Park. MD.

Amber Drive is in California, MD, and extends west off Chancellors Run Road and forms the trunk of branches of mostly dead-end roads comprising the Hickory Hills subdivision. Amber Drive and the subdivision itself extends to Kinnegad Drive which runs north. Kinnegad stops less than 100 feet short of Taylor Lane where a connection could provide the sprawling Hickory Hills subdivision with a second access.
