Rep. Hoyer: Time for Congress to Act

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama’s decision to have Congress weigh in on the U.S.’s response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons:
“President Obama has carefully weighed the case for taking action along with our international partners to respond forcefully to the Syrian regime’s deadly and nefarious use of chemical weapons. Now it is time for Congress, as the representatives of the American people, to do the same.
“I agree with the President that this is a decision that Congress must participate in making, and I believe that the Syrian regime must know that their blatant violation of international norms will be met with a strong response. I am hopeful that Congress will make clear through our decision the enduring strength of our democracy and the deeply held values that continue to make us a moral leader in the world.”

“I continue to be deeply concerned about the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people – action which demands outrage from the international community and cannot be tolerated. I appreciate the Obama Administration’s ongoing efforts to keep Congress informed of latest developments and to work with us to determine the best course of action ahead.”
