One-Act Plays on Stage at Festival

Local and regional artists and students will present their original one-act plays June 4 and 5, 2016, for the fourth annual Watermelon One-Act Festival at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

WOAF is a production of Watermelon Inc., a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the theater arts and provides a nurturing environment for original works. The one-act plays are written and performed by these artists. Each day of the festival, three to four plays will be performed and adjudicated by qualified professionals during four performance sessions on Saturday, June 4. The plays that earn the top scores will compete in the finals at 2 pm Sunday, June 5. The winning script, director, ensemble, and performers will be awarded at a ceremony after the finals. Audience members will be able to vote for their favorite play during the Saturday session and the Sunday finals. The votes will determine the “Wild Card” finalist and the Audience Choice Award.

The competition schedule Saturday, June 4, includes:

10 am: R. DaSilva’s “Possibilities Endless,” Rick Thompson’s “Almost Opposites Attract,” and Lois Stephenson’s “Loving It!”

1 pm: Joanne McDonald’s “Senior Housing,” Yair Packer’s “Jumping Jasper,” and Andrew Martineau’s “Etched in Stone”

3:30 pm: Cody Beltis’ “The Museum at Clifton Park,” Chris Joyce’s “The Wright Others,” Yair Packer’s “Norma’s Scent,” and Faina Vitebsky’s “The Ticking Clock”

7:30 pm – Jack Wibbe’s “The Queen of Sodom,” Chris Joyce’s “The Fall of Man,” Aaron Leventman’s “Confessions of a Character Actor,” and R. J. Boia’s “Valentine’s Day”

Tickets are $12 per Saturday session, or $10 for students and seniors, and then $20 for the Sunday finals and awards ceremony, or $15 for students and seniors. The ticket price includes food and beverages. Get a festival pass for both days for $55, or $50 for students and seniors. All tickets will be sold at the door. and only cash or checks will be accepted – no credit cards. Only ticket holders can vote for their favorite play.

Performances will be at the Bruce Davis Theatre in Montgomery Hall of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Some plays are not appropriate for children.
