Mentor Students at Summer Coding Academy

Board

The St. Mary’s County Library is planning coding workshops for the summer, and volunteers are needed to help. There are three age groups — elementary, middle, and high schoolers, and the workshops will be meeting at different days and times in June, July, and August. The Patuxent Partnership is calling on its members to find the time to help out.

Each class is limited to nine students.

Elementary Coders will meet at the Lexington Park Library on Tuesdays from 3 to 4 pm, June 28 through July 12. This class will use the snap-together programming language Scratch. Students will learn to write their own beginner programs, then they get to test-drive a robot. The class is for first- to fifth-graders. Registration will open two weeks before the first session. Volunteers should plan to attend all three sessions.

Middle School Coders will meet at the Lexington Park Library on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 pm, July 19 and 26 and Aug. 2 and 9. These students will use Scratch programming language to write their own programs and then they will test their skills by programming a robot. This group is for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders. Registration will open two weeks before the first session. Volunteers and students should plan to attend all four sessions.

High School Coders will meet at the Lexington Park Library every Tuesday from 2 to 4 pm, July 7 through 28. Students will learn the basics of the Python programming language, then write and test their own programs to control a robot. This program is for ninth- through 12th-graders. Registration will open two weeks before the first session. Students and volunteers should plan to attend all four sessions.

If you would like to be a mentor for any of these programs, please contact Jill Hutchison, assistant branch manager of the Lexington Park Library, at [email protected] or 301-863-8188, ext. 2005.
