St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation and Parks is currently looking for lifeguards to work at the Great Mills Pool, located on Great Mills Road next to Great Mills High School.

The perfect candidate will have a current Red Cross Certification in lifeguarding, CPR and AED. The pool is open year-round, so these part-time positions last throughout the year. The current openings are for all days and times between 6 am and 8 pm.

Interested individuals may obtain an application at the pool or get it here. For more information call 301-866-6560.

Being a lifeguard is a big responsibility and more than just a job. Pools should be safe, relaxing places and lifeguards are there to ensure that everyone has a good time. They are expected to create a safe environment for swimmers, and help to make sure pool patrons do not fall or hurt themselves.

The job includes being vigilant about watching for incidents to help prevent accidents before they happen. When incidents do happen, the lifeguard has to be able to perform life-saving activities like resuscitation and first aid. Some lifeguards also provide swimming training to novices and children.

Candidates for this job are excellent swimmers who have been certified in life-saving techniques.

The Great Mills Pool is able to be open year-round because in the cooler months it is enclosed in an air-supported bubble from September until May to allow year-round usage. The bubble is taken down in the summer, creating an outdoor pool environment. Because of this, lifeguards at the pool are able to be employed through all seasons of the year.

The pool has been an opportunity for St. Mary’s County residents and visitors of all ages to enjoy recreational, therapeutic, instructional, and competitive swimming.

The 25-yard by 25-meter pool has six lanes and has a “zero depth” entry for maximum accessibility. The entry is ramp-style and convenient for children and adults who have a difficult time with ladders. The facility bathhouses include showers, lockers, restrooms and a lifeguard room.
