Juneteenth Celebration Set

Juneteenth Celebration
Posted for Lexington Park Business and Community Association

Celebrate Juneteenth with family from noon to 8 pm June 20 in the John G. Lancaster Park in Lexington Park.

See “Soul in Motion” African dancers and drummers, enjoy Super Magic Man Reggie Rice, or bring the kids for a moon bounce, face painting and pony rides. The event is free and open to the public.

Juneteenth originally celebrated the end of slavery in Texas, which came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and 1,800 troops of the Union Army traveled to Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were free. Abraham’s Lincolns proclamation of the end of slavery had not previously taken effect in Texas.

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated across the country.

“Juneteenth is a day of reflection, a day of renewal, a pride-filled day. It is a moment in time taken to appreciate the African American experience. It is inclusive of all races, ethnicities and nationalities as nothing is more comforting than the hand of a friend.”
