Join Walden’s Recovery Discovery Walk Oct. 27

Walden Recovery Walk

Walden Recovery WalkOn Saturday, Oct. 27, Walden will celebrate all forms and experiences of recovery with a Recovery Discovery Walk.  This free public event will be held rain or shine at Leonard Hall Recreation Center, located at 23145 Leonard Hall Drive, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650.  Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Recovery Walk commencing at 9 a.m.  After the Walk, an Open Mic sharing session will be available until 11 a.m.

The Recovery Discovery Walk is an easy 1.25 mile route around Government Center that should be accessible to all ability levels.  This is a family friendly event, and pets on a leash are welcome.  For a donation of $10, participants can receive a recovery-themed t-shirt (while supplies last). Chesapeake Custom Embroidery printed the shirts.

“The Recovery Discovery Walk’s purpose is to celebrate all experiences in the big tent of recovery,” explains Laura Webb, Community Engagement Manager.  A person or a family might be recovering from a trauma, grief, a chronic physical or mental illness, an addiction.  People also recover in various ways, with some finding a returning ability to enjoy life while others find themselves truly enjoying life for the first time.  To others, recovery means a remission of symptoms or even the elimination of symptoms.   Each individual has a unique experience with recovery.”

Kathleen O’Brien, Executive Director of Walden, hopes the event will make the community be more aware that help is available.  “We want the community to know about the range of treatment and recovery support options for those who want to seek help for a crisis, a personally overwhelming event, a mental illness like depression or anxiety, or problems with alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription medication.” This is an important message to share, given that the average person impacted by a behavioral health issue delays getting help for 10 years.

Walden thanks additional sponsors Cherry Cove Land Development, CSC Applied Technologies, Maryland AARP, Old Line Bank, Wyle, and Barefoot Graphics.  For more information about attending or donating to the Recovery Discovery Walk, please contact Laura Webb at 301-997-1300 x 804 or [email protected].  You may also visit www.waldensierra.org to learn about this event as well as Walden’s substance abuse treatment, mental health and recovery support services.  Walden’s 24 hour crisis hotline number is 301-863-6661.
