Grant Makes Healthy Food Available

Residents who use SNAP, WIC, and senior food programs can get extra help buying healthy food at the Home Grown Farm Market in Lexington Park, MD. Because of a $5,000 grant from the Dominion Foundation through the Southern Maryland Agriculture Development Commission, the market will be able to match up to $10 in food purchases per customer per week. The families who are eligible can get double the amount of healthy fresh fruit and vegetables if they are using one of these forms of benefits.

Customers will get tokens to buy up to $10 per week of extra products at the Home Grown Farm Market, excluding wine and nonfood items.

The Home Grown Farm Market is located at 21078 Three Notch Road in Lexington Park, MD 20653. It is one of three that are sponsored by the St. Mary’s County Department of Economic Development. The market has an electronic card reader so customers can use credit, debit, and electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards. The Home Grown market is open 10 am to 4 pm Wednesdays and 9 am to 1 pm Saturdays.

The other two markets sponsored by the county are the California Farmers Market, which is housed in the BAE System parking lot on Route 235 in California, MD, and the North St. Mary’s County Farmers Market, at the Charlotte Hall Library, at the corner of Route 5 and Route 6 in Charlotte Hall, MD.

The California market is open 9 am to 1 pm Saturdays through Nov. 28, 2016.

The Charlotte Hall market is open through October Mondays through Saturdays.

The Department of Economic Development encourages residents all over the county to visit these and other farmers markets for the best, most delicious local produce. For more information about the markets in St. Mary’s County click here. Remember … Shop Local. Shop Often!
