SMECO Offers Incentive for EV Owners

EV Charging Station

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative offers an incentive program to owners of electric vehicles. Visit SMECO’s website to enroll in the EV Recharge program and earn up to $120 each year members participate. Plus, in December, members will receive an additional $50 instantly when they enroll in Managed Charging before the end of the year.

The offer expires on December 31, 2025.

Can you see yourself driving an EV?

  • Electric vehicles cost significantly less to operate than gas-powered vehicles—three to five times cheaper, depending on local gas prices and electricity rates.
  • EVs produce no tailpipe emissions, and you can skip trips to the gas station by charging at home using a Level 1 or Level 2 charger.
  • EV motors offer quiet, smooth performance, stronger acceleration, and require less maintenance than traditional gas-powered engines.

SMECO’s Electric Vehicle Guide can help members choose the EV model that’s right for them. With this online tool, you can calculate monthly savings, find available incentives and offers, compare models, locate nearby charging stations, and more.

SMECO – The Cooperative Difference

SMECO was incorporated in 1937 and is one of the 15 largest electric cooperatives in the United States with more than 170,000 member accounts in Charles County, St. Mary’s County, southern Prince George’s County, and most of Calvert County.

Electric cooperatives are shaped by the communities they serve, because co-ops are owned by their customers.  Co-op members elect the men and women who serve on the Board of Directors. Members share the responsibility of ownership by financing the cooperative’s operations, but they also share its rewards.

At the end of each year, SMECO’s margins (profits) are allocated to members’ capital credit accounts. SMECO uses its profits to invest in new construction, system improvements, and facility upgrades. The Board of Directors regularly evaluates the financial condition of the co-op and determines when members will receive a refund. Since 1937, SMECO has refunded more than $128 million.

As a cooperative, SMECO will always put its members first and be responsive, reliable, and resourceful — the power you can count on.
