Arts Council Notes 2025 Accomplishments
Susie Glauner, executive director of the St. Mary’s County Arts Council, offered an end-of-the-year thank you in its latest newsletter highlighting the group’s accomplishments in 2025.
Mural Unveiled at Pax River Village Center
Artist Rosalia Torres-Weiner has created a mural at the Pax River Village Center on Great Mills Road to honor the Latino community. “Painting this mural in Lexington Park has been such a gift!” she says.
House Defense Spending Bill Includes More F-35s, One Attack Sub
The US House on Friday narrowly passed its version of the $833 billion defense spending bill for fiscal 2025. The legislation would buy eight more F-35s beyond the Pentagon’s budget request of 68, while only procuring one Virginia-class attack submarine instead of the usual two vessels the bill usually provides.

Congressional lawmakers are pushing for two submarines despite the US Navy wanting just one. A House Armed Services subcommittee has made clear it wants the service to buy two attack submarines in fiscal 2025 in order to keep the submarine-industrial base on a path of recovery.
After 45 Years, F/A-18 Continues to Evolve
The Navy’s F/A-18 Hornet celebrated its 45th anniversary earlier this month. The aircraft was born at Naval Air Systems Command and developed to be a strike fighter. The Hornet introduced a level of aircraft superiority that had not been seen before and set the standard for future development of next-generation fighters. Improvements to the fighter jet ensure that it will remain the Navy’s “workhorse.”
