St. Mary’s Renews Support for SMIT

The Southern Maryland Innovation and Technology Initiative (SMIT) will gain support this year from technical support to be supplied by the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), the result of a recently signed memorandum of agreement with  to provide technical support for the ongoing success of SMIT.

SMIT is the work of many hands including the NAWCAD Technology Transfer Office, TEDCO and the University of Maryland. SMIT seeks bring together entrepreneurs, inventors, developers, researchers, mentors, and investors to monthly “MeetUps.” Associated with

TEDCO  contracted with Ben Solomon, CEO and Co-founder of Hyperion Technologies LLC, to staff SMIT’s efforts. Hyperion Technologies was founded at the University of Maryland and is active within the Mid-Atlantic commercial UAS and tech venture community.

In addition to his work with Hyperion, Mr. Solomon is an adjunct instructor with DC I-Corps, a National Science Foundation-sponsored technology startup program. Within DC I-Corps he started and currently heads the Fed Tech Program, which transfers technology from the United States Federal Laboratory system into the DC I-Corps network.

The TEDCO contract with St. Mary’s County includes:

  • Facilitate SMIT MeetUps initiative with County and Navy representatives and SMIT-related events
  • Expand SMIT’s presence and marketing reach through social media
  • Strengthen SMIT’s collaborative relationship with PaxSpace
  • Assist a minimum of 2 SMIT members to begin to grow from venture ideation stage to business model stage
  • Develop and facilitate mentors to advise on venture creation
  • Explore angel investor fund opportunities
