FDR Boulevard South may not be complete in Lexington Park, Maryland yet, but the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission plans to upgrade its sewer and water lines in the right of way before St. Mary’s County finishes construction of the new road later this decade.

At a public information meeting Tuesday night, executive director Jacquelyn Meiser said MetCom plans to bid out the project Sept. 6, begin construction by October and have it all finished by January 2013.

The project will replace a deteriorating sewer line between Great Mills Road and Shangri-La Drive on the west side of the future FDR Boulevard, expanding its capacity. It will also complete a water line, begun at Shangri-La Drive by the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and planned to be extended during the construction of the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, connecting it to a Great Mills Road line.

“It’s a fairly straightforward project,” Ms. Meiser said, noting that no new customers will be added during the construction.

MetCom expects the design for the project to be done by the end of this month and will begin advertising for bids Aug. 9.

The construction will require cutting into the pavement of Great Mills Road, but Meiser said work will be done at off-peak traffic times.

The St. Mary’s County Commissioners recently approved the purchase of land to complete FDR Boulevard, and the county is scheduled to construct the road between 2015 and 2017.
