Library to Present ‘St. Mary’s Civil Rights Story’

Juneteenth
The African American Monument in Elmer Brown Freedom Park in Lexington Park.

The Lexington Park Library will present “A St. Mary’s Civil Rights Story” from 11am to noon Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Join the library as it presents a discussion on the often unrecognized and undervalued efforts of Black women in the civil rights movements in St. Mary’s County.

Lifelong countians Everlyn Holland, Alonzo Gaskin, and Janice Walthour will share their perspectives on the past and present with moderator Merideth Taylor.

People in a county long known as “a rural backwater” have continued over centuries to strive for civil and human rights. Learn about key moments and actions, from freedom lawsuits and emancipation, to citizen political action groups, and desegregation in health care and education.

This is a walk-in program. Registration not necessary unless you would like a follow up email.

Bright Star Theatre will explore the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a free event for all ages from 2 to 3pm Sunday, February 23.

Both programs are presented in partnership with the St. Mary’s County Library and the St. Mary’s County NAACP #7025.

The library is at 21677 FDR Blvd. in Lexington Park.
