Freedom Day Set June 20 at Fairgrounds

The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions Freedom Day will be held from noon to 6pm Saturday, June 20, at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds. Free admission.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence–a PROMISE of Freedom for All. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States–a PROMISE of Freedom for All. Therefore, the theme this year is “Building on the Promise of Freedom for All.”
The event will continue through the afternoon with live music featuring Ni Dembaya African Dance and Drumming, and Stone Pleasure and Get2Gether bands, as well as a performance by Ms. Story bringing women from history to life.
There will be a variety of commercial and nonprofit vendors, food trucks, and activities for all ages. Children’s activities will include crafts, face painting, balloon art, moon bounce, and horseback riding.
DJ Errol Wyatt and the Keep On Steppin’ seniors will be demonstrating R&B line dancing, encouraging everyone to participate.
There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome to this family-friendly event. There will be bleachers but bring your lawn chairs if desired.
What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a national holiday commemorating and celebrating the end of slavery in America. It is a day of reflection, a day of renewal, a pride-filled day. It is a day for all Americans to come together to reflect on our past as a nation, celebrate the African American experience, and begin to build a brighter future together.
